Plenty of runs for the new cricket season
By Andy Devoy

The cricket season has begun and that is official. How do I know this? The weather has taken a turn for the worse.

cricket Firstly a big thank you to our Head Groundsman, Justin Lewis, for preparing a wonderful pitch for the new season. There have been runs a-plenty in the early season games as the warm spring has enabled him to prepare a dry flat wicket. I’m actually making excuses for the bowlers out there who’ve been watching the ball sail over the heads as the batsmen have helped themselves to runs. The first two Sunday games produced over a thousand runs with The Lee club records tumbling in the second home game (we won the first in convincing fashion). Peter Neal broke the individual scoring record with 167 not out against Dinton. This game also produced the highest ever team total of 365 – 3. I’m glad to say one bowler proved you can bowl on any track, Chris Hall taking 5 wickets as The Lee coasted home to victory. The first League games ended in draws for the first and second team. I’m not sure the 1st team game was necessarily enjoyed by the crowd as The Lee chasing 304 for victory batted out 47 overs scoring 135 – 9 to grind out a draw. Runs easy to come by?

The Colts season has got underway with everyone enjoying the first Friday night, although it did get a little cold towards the end. It was nice to see many of the children wearing their recently acquired club kit. Thanks to Tony Rigby for lending us a P.A. system on the first night. This made it much easier for the children to listen to instructions and follow what was going on.

The older boys and girls have been playing league and cup games and I’m pleased to say we have won three of our first four games. All bodes well for a great season.
