The Lee Cricket Club

By Andy Devoy

I’m glad to say some sunny weather greeted the arrival of the new season, although our first Friday night Colts session was a bit damp. However there was still a huge crowd of eager children practising their skills and having lots of fun under the guidance of our coaches. Let’s hope the good weather continues as it is a wonderful sight seeing all the youngsters playing on our beautiful ground.

The one person who has been taken most by surprise is the Bar Manager Bryan Hart who manages the ‘Friday Night Drinking Team’. He has been quite impressed by the dedication and application of the parents.

A big thank you to Jon Goldby, who has spent many long hours putting together our mobile nets that arrived in a ‘flat-pack’ form. This will be a great asset to the club and will enable us to continue the development of our older children who are playing hardball cricket. Three of our four junior teams got off to winning starts and I’m sure this will continue through the season.

I’m glad to say the Saturday 1st Eleven also got off to a flyer winning their first three games. The captain Jon Humphreys is confident of promotion this season… you read it here first.

Jon also recently met Andrew Strauss, the England opener, who donated to the club a lot of items of memorabilia including his England kitbag which he signed, the boots he wore when England won the Ashes, signed photos and England caps, which will be used as raffle prizes to raise some valuable cash for the club.
