Let’s have a gold medal-winning fête!

By Catherine Larmour

There are, of course, two events of major significance happening this summer. One is in Beijing and the other, much more important one, is on The-Lee Green from 2 to 5 pm on Saturday 14th June. For, as everyone knows, there is nothing more pleasant or memorable than an afternoon spent at the Church Fête, and this year’s will be no exception.

To fire the starting pistol, as it were, we are lucky enough to have John Glanfield, long-time local resident, pillar of the congregation, and everyone’s favourite retired church architect.

Warm up by buying a few raffle tickets (if you haven’t already got them) and a glass of Pimm’s. Get competitive at games such as the coconut shy, the hoopla and Splat the Rat. Sprint for the fine array of goods on offer at the cake, plant, toy and book stalls. Cartwheel your way over to the tombola. Have a ride on the (nearly) Olympic standard pony, or in the donkey cart. Spring like a gymnast on the bouncy castle. After all that exercise, I’m sure an ice-cream or a delicious tea (in the Old Church) will help to revive you.

One important request… if any of you kind people out there have any gazebos that you could lend us for the day (or donate), then we’d be most grateful, as we are in need of several more than we have at the moment. The stallholders do rely upon the shelter they afford from the elements.

Here once more is the contact list for your donations:
Plants: Mary Stewart-Liberty (837341)
Raffle prizes / tickets: Tim Hart (837328)
Tombola prizes: Paul Woodhouse (837555) or Alison Weir (837529)
Children’s tombola: Charlotte Reynolds (793221)
Toys and books: Jo and Steve Wall (837721)
Bric-a-brac (no glasses, lampshades, flower baskets or anything broken, please!): Reina Free (837407)
Cakes/ jam/ produce: Catherine Larmour (837309).
So run, run as fast as you can to the fête and help give vital support to St John the Baptist church. For more information, please call me on 837309.
