scout hall Lee Common Scout Group
By Marilyn Burrows

Chris Nevill’s outstanding service to scouting, over 25 years, was recognised recently by the Chief Scout at a presentation attended by the County and District Commissioners. Chris was given a Bar to the Award for Merit for his outstanding contribution to leadership in scouting.

Certificates for long service were also given to:
Pat Chinnery (Cub Pack Helper),
Marilyn Burrows (Cub Scout Leader),
Rick Brockett (Scouts’ Quartermaster) and
Steve Burrows (Scout Leader).
The scout troop continues to maintain a high regular attendance for skills evenings and weekends away caving and climbing, much of this coordinated by James Bruton, Assistant Leader. The Snowdonia trekking weekend, for older scouts, was marked by wet and windy conditions which tested their resolve, but was good experience for team-building and leadership. Recently, the troop had a ‘teach a parent a skill’ evening – parents paid close attention to fire-lighting, camp cooking and knot tying and were relatively well-behaved! The lads now look forward to summer camp at a fabulous riverside location in the grounds of Castle Hill, a stately home near Barnstable. Chris Nevill takes the credit for finding this one!

The cub pack has given the environment plenty of thought this year, helping David Knight of Road Farm with the construction of bird and bat boxes. They have also been climbing at Green Park. The Sixers and Seconders joined scouts and leaders for a special camp at Braid Wood, learning basic camping and bushcraft skills, including how to prepare and cook wild rabbit. Matt Harrison, our long-term assistant, is preparing a conservation project for us as part of his Queen’s Scout Award.

The beaver colony flourishes under the leadership of Hayley Farrelly. The Beaver Scouts are attending our group camp at Longridge Water Activities Centre, where they will be dragon-boating.

The group’s tombola stall will, once again, be a major draw at The Lee Flower Show and we are grateful for the generosity of villagers who donate bottles, tins and jars in the preceding week.
