By Viv Robins It is estimated that there are more than 43,000 unpaid (and often unsung) carers in Bucks – people looking after a relative or friend who, due to frailty, illness or disability, would be unable to live independently without them. Nationwide such carers are thought to save the State £57 billion a year – and yet many of them have no idea that they are entitled to support in their own right. That is the purpose of a High Wycombe-based organisation known as Carers Bucks. The youngest carer whom they support is six, the oldest an unbelievable 97 – she looks after her daughter in her seventies who has learning difficulties. Among other information, Carers Bucks can provide advice on the availability of grants and services in the community, links with other carers including support groups, liaison with statutory, health and other organisations – and sometimes merely a sympathetic and listening ear. If you are a carer, or know some-one who you think would benefit from the help this organisation can provide, please contact them on 01494 463536 or write to Carers Bucks, 9 Amersham Hill, High Wycombe, HP13 6NR (mail@carersbucks.org). |
