Scouts are on winning form
By Marilyn Burrows

The start of 2011 finds the Group in great form. Our scout troop entered several District events, with major congrats going to the Grimsdyke Hike team (average age 13) who beat 40 others in this notoriously tough sub-zero overnight challenge, taking the trophy for the first time! Obviously they’d honed their compass skills with leader Tom Brockett’s guidance and were fit and fast enough to make an excellent time. Thanks to Dougal Hildreth for ‘team-shadowing’ on the night.

In the autumn Mike Senior shared with the troop his knowledge about the challenges of war and Ballinger resident Tony Campion demonstrated wood-turning skills – both contributions greatly appreciated.

Our Cub Scouts were also busy, with Peter winning the District chess and Jamie coming third in the draughts tournaments. A small group, accompanied by Pack Assistant Del Jones, had an action-packed trip to the National Space Centre (just before Del broke his ankle!). A large number booked for the panto trip, too.

The Pack continues to have the enthusiastic support of Fiona Calder and Chris Bruton, for which we say a very big Thank You!

The newly-formed Beaver Scout colony, under the leadership of Fiona Jones, has added a real buzz to the Group. We thank Josh Porter for finding the time in between A levels to help with their lively programme and appreciate the assistance that parents have offered to Fiona.

Our scout hut has had upgraded lighting installed after the summer’s fund-raising and makes a practical hire venue for children’s parties and village activities. Please contact our Group Scout Leader Chris Nevill on 864881 for details of availability.
