white elephant HS2: time to turn the screw
By Tim Hart

When you read this there will be about 90 days to the end of the HS2 consultation period! There has been much activity both in public and behind the scenes, including further press articles criticising the proposal and a debate in Westminster Hall on 31st March. Also the Parliamentary Transport Select Committee is currently undertaking its own inquiry into the strategic case for High Speed Rail.

All of these are a result of action-group pressure and it’s very important that this is maintained. There are some important events coming up which are vital for residents to attend.

On Sunday 8th May the HS2 Action Alliance and The Misbourne Valley Action Groups are hosting a rally in Great Missenden on the playing fields of Great Missenden Church of England School (access via the Buryfields Car Park). The aim of the rally is to help local residents shape their arguments against HS2. You’ll hear speeches from local MPs, councillors and local people leading the campaign. There will be further written details of what to say at the Government/HS2 road shows and in written responses to the consultation.

The official consultation includes Department for Transport and HS2 Ltd. road shows. Local road show events in May include (all are 8:00 am to 8:00 pm):
9th             Chalfont St Giles, Blizzards Yard Car Park.
10th-11th    Aylesbury, Stoke Mandeville Stadium.
12th             Great Missenden Link Road Car Park (note this is a change from the Black Horse Pub).
13th-14th    Wendover Memorial Hall.
18th-19th    Amersham, Amersham & Chiltern Rugby Club.
Please go along and tell the Department and HS2 that plans for the HS2 high-speed rail link are based upon:
•    a business case with unrealistic assumptions
•    no environmental impact assessment
•    questionable strategic benefits.
There is a ‘help sheet’ for road show attendees. If you would like a copy please contact me by email (tim.hart@virgin.net) stating your name and address, as I will only email it back to local residents.

On Saturday 4th June Pat and Tony Lea are holding a Hog Roast at Rodwells, Oxford Street which is Chiltern Ridges HS2 Action Group’s major summer fund-raising event. During the evening there will be an auction of excellent prizes which already include a day at a Formula One factory for four people, a cruiser on the Thames for the day for 10 people, a case of top-quality wines and a house for a week for eight people in Cornwall. There will also be a raffle going on during the evening. Tickets are £20 and are obtainable from Pat and Tony Lea on 837237. Please support this event.

We are nearly halfway to our initial fundraising target, thanks to generous donations. We have already committed funds towards the national campaign for expert opinion and media management. If you would like to make a donation please contact me.
