The Chiltern Cycleway –  Southern Loop

This route tackles the Southern section of the 170-mile Chiltern Cycleway, which opened in June last year.
The 61-mile circuit starts from Great Hampden and takes in many villages en route to Henley and back via Ewelme and Radnage. The route is on lanes and suitable for all bikes and weather conditions.

The Cycleway claims to be fully signposted, but a map is advisable. The full booklet can be obtained from

Route Finding:
  1. Start at Great Hampden, near the cricket pitch. Ignore the Cycleway signs and follow road signs to Speen.
  2. Join the Cycleway in Speen, turning right at the T-junction. Follow the Cycleway signs from now on. Continue through Flowers Bottom and Darvilshill.
  3. Take care crossing the A4010 in Saunderton.
  4. Turn right onto the A40 in West Wycombe and then shortly left to Wheeler End.
  5. Cross the B482 in Lane End. Continue through Moor Common to Frieth.
  6. Turn left in Frieth, continue through Parmoor and turn right downhill by Pheasants.
  7. In the Hambleden valley, turn right towards Skirmett, then left uphill past vineyard and brewery. Turn left at end of wood to Fawley, then straight ahead to Lower Assendon.
  8. Turn left onto cycle path by A4130 and continue into Henley.
  9. Leave Henley by the Reading Road then fork right to Peppard. Continue through Harpsden and Mays Green to Binfield Heath.
  10. Turn right to Dunsden Green and then right towards Sonning Common. Cross B481 and take left to Kidmore End.
  11. Turn right in Kidmore End, joining a long “quiet lane”. Follow signs to Stoke Row.
  12. In Stoke Row, turn left, shortly left again, then right at bottom of dip towards Ipsden.
  13. From Ipsden follow signs to Ewelme, leaving the ‘quiet lane’ at Swains Way.
  14. In Ewelme turn right uphill then left to Cookley Green.
  15. Turn left in Cookley Green then cross the B480 towards Christmas Common.
  16. Continue straight ahead at Christmas Common. Cross M40 and turn right on A40 to Stokenchurch.
  17. After Stokenchurch bear left to Radnage. Find your way through Radnage and take lane uphill to Bledlow Ridge.
  18. Cross road on Bledlow Ridge and take lane downhill. Then turn right onto Icknield Way (lane). Cross A4010 and head uphill.
  19. At t-junction turn left then left again, losing height. Then turn right and climb up to Whiteleaf Cross.
  20. At t-junction near Whiteleaf Cross turn right to Redland End then straight ahead to Great Hampden.
Total distance: 61 miles. Total climbing 1500m. Allow six hours, depending on conditions.
Don’t forget: Helmet, puncture repair kit, water, go slow for horses.
